8 Wedding Colour Mistakes And Ways To Avoid Them

Many brides find it tough to decide on their wedding colours; the choices can be overwhelming and often the colours which are their favourites don’t match together. In this guide, we’re outlining 8 common mistakes brides-to-be often make when selecting their wedding colours and also ways to avoid them…

1. Using too many colours

You certainly do not want to look like a Crayloa box! So do avoid the bright rainbow theme unless of course you select pretty pastel shades that aren’t too heavy on the eyes. That being said; choosing too many different colours could still end up confusing guests who cannot tell who is and isn’t from the bridal party. If, however, you have your heart set on the rainbow palette; then stick to one main colour and accessorize with the other colours.

2. Choosing colours that just don’t work for you

The choice of your wedding colours depends on many factors:

  • The bride and bridesmaids’ skin tones
  • The season
  • The venue

If you’re getting married in an old church, the colours of the décor and carpet might clash with your selected colours. Similarly, if an outdoor setting is what you’ve decided on, then you might want to choose fresh and light colours that work well against the beautiful outdoors. You and your bridesmaids’ skin undertones also play an important role in your wedding colours. It’s best to try on dresses in a similar colour before committing to them!

3. Not thinking about the wedding flowers when selecting wedding colours

If your favourite blooms are not available in the colours you love, then you might need to incorporate them as an accent shade rather than the dominant one. Just make sure that it all comes together as a cohesive look. You can always go for white flowers and add in a pop of your chosen colours through the bouquet tie or accessories.

4. Not thinking of the season

Your wedding colours will look the best if you let Mother Nature guide you. Just make sure that the colours you choose work well against the backdrop of blooms and foliage that is naturally occurring that season. Be wary of colours that are already chosen for specific celebrations for example red and green are the colours of the Holidays. Pastel shades are gorgeous during the warmer months and colours like maroon, ochre, amber etc work really well for fall and autumn. Of course, these are only guidelines, we say your wedding, your way!

5. Not considering your bridesmaids

While you cannot please everybody and it is, after all, your Big Day, it pays to think about your bridesmaids as well. Have a chat with your maids about colours and think about their skin tone too – if the majority of the bridesmaids seem unhappy with the colours chosen, then it may be best to rethink your decision.

6. Not consulting the groom and groomsmen

Your groom and groomsmen will also be incorporating the wedding colours in to their wedding wear through boutonnieres, pocket squares and the likes of ties and bow ties so make sure they’re kept in the loop when you select the colours.

7. Going overboard with the colours on the wedding cake

We love a colourful wedding cake but too many colours can be overpowering. Consult a good wedding cake specialist who knows how to subtly incorporate your chosen wedding colours through flowers and details instead of food colouring.

8. Forgetting small touches

Don’t forget to add a splash of your chosen wedding colours throughout your decor whether it’s on the invitations, place cards, favours, some colours of choice in your bridal bouquet or bridesmaids’ bouquets, in your flower girl’s hair, on the wedding cake or through a waist sash for instance. There are lots of little ways you can work in your colours.
