How To Choose Your Bridal Bouquet To Complement Your Dress

If you’ve snagged that beautiful Vera Wang wedding dress that you always dreamed of and a pair of gorgeous embellished Jimmy Choos to go along with it, the next thing you need to completely nail your bridal look is the perfect bridal bouquet. Here is our guide to choosing one that complements your wedding dress…

Make sure it suits your dress

Your wedding gown silhouette and design should be a deciding factor when you choose your bouquet. The idea is that your bouquet should complement you and your dress and not take away attention from it. If you have picked a sheath, a column or a mermaid dress, consider using a smaller arrangement like a nosegay or a posey. You could even opt for just a couple of long stemmed flowers. In case you have picked a more voluminous gown carry a bigger bouquet for instance a cascade or a round arrangement. Remember, it shouldn’t be uncomfortable to carry or cause you to hunch your shoulders when you’re walking. If you’re having a casual wedding and a not so formal wedding gown, you could opt for a less formal looking hand tied bouquet.

Pick the right flowers

If you’re not too familiar with which flowers to pick, talk to your florist about what’s in season – they’ll be a good bit cheaper, not to mention, they’ll be much fresher. Roses are eternal and timeless favourites but your options can vary from lilies, peonies, hydrangeas and freesias to stephanotis, orchids or tulips. And that’s just the tip of it!

Pick the right colors

It’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to pick which colors will best suit your dress. Most brides tend to pick shades of white, cream and ivory for their gowns so if you’re wearing a white dress, pick white flowers along with some brighter colored flowers and some green foliage to match your colour scheme. You want your bouquets to stand out in your wedding pictures but not overshadow everything else!

There are lots of ways you can personalize your bouquet. Every one remembers Princess Diana carrying a stunning cascade bouquet of orchids and a myrtle spring which was taken from a bush that Queen Victoria had planted. The Duchess of Cambridge continued the tradition of using the myrtle spring but she also added Sweet Williams as an obvious reference to her future husband along with lilies. Another lovely way to enhance your bouquet is with a wrap or tie. Wrap the stems in some dazzling fabric, pretty ribbon or even in strips of sequins or pearls. Make it all the more personal and sentimental by adding a brooch that belonged to your grandmother or mom. If your family home has a garden, you could even include some hand picked flowers from it into your bouquet.

Once you have picked the perfect bridal bouquet, you can opt to have it preserved professionally by your florist after the wedding so that it always serves as a wonderful reminder of the wedding. Another lovely option is to dry or press the flowers yourself!
