Wedding dress shopping can be a nightmare for some and if you’ve curves, understandably it can be even more daunting with size 6 samples and unnaturally thin models showcasing gowns in some cases. Luckily, the tide has turned and designers are designing collections for brides with curves, a range of beautiful fashion-forward wedding dresses that fit, flatter and show off the curvy feminine figure to its fullest!
One of the most important and practical tips for all brides is to pick a dress silhouette that suits their style and flatters their figure. These days, many dress designers are known for beautiful plus size wedding gowns and the stunning collections from WtooCurve, Mori Lee’s Julietta Collection, Callista and the fabulous Allure Bridal which is stocked in The Dubai Bridal Showroom are some of our favourites. Before, you hit the shops, here’s some practical shopping and styling tips that will help you find your dream dress and look your best on the Big Day…
1. Call ahead
Not all stores carry plus size wedding dresses so make sure you check ahead online or give them a call ahead and let them know that you’re looking to see if they stock plus size gowns. The salesperson’s experience can also come in handy so make sure you talk to them and get his/her opinion on silhouettes and shapes. Find someone who is excited about what they do and who is willing to take the time to address your queries.
2. Avoid too-tight a fit
Avoid overly tight fitting plus size wedding gowns. Forget the size tag; just go for a dress that fits well. You want to look amzing and feel comfortable too!
3. Avoid an overly baggy or loose fit
Many women feel that they can hide their body under loose gowns. The thing is, you would only be drawing attention to your body by wearing such dresses. Instead, make sure you arrange for a number of fittings especially in the final month leading up to the wedding so that it’s the perfect fit.

4. Don’t worry about the size tag
Wedding gown sizes tend to vary based on the brands, materials etc. So try on different sizes, no matter what the size tag says.
5. Know what you like
Know what you like and don’t like whether you’re looking to show off your waist or cover up your arms with some cap sleeves.

6. Know your body shape
There are different shapes that can guide you when it comes to shopping for your figure such as an hour glass figure or pear shape figure. This can help you buy a dress in the right silhouette. For example, rectangular body shape brides would require a gown that defines their best parts (décolletage, toned legs or killer curves); pear shaped brides would do well with bridal separates which balance the body better. This of course is a only a guide – you know your body best and what you feel comfortable in.
7. Check out the classics
Just because everyone is rushing to try the latest trends doesn’t mean you have to. In many cases, classic cuts and silhouettes can be super flattering and timeless!

8. Emphasize with accessories
Wear a beautiful necklace to draw attention to the neck or a belt to emphasize your waist. If you’re wearing an off-the-shoulder gown, shoulder and back jewelry can look stunning too!
9. Wear the right undergarments
The right fitting undergarments can help you feel comfortable and confident. They will also allow your wedding dress to sit better on your frame.

10. Don’t forget the accessories
A bit of height can do wonders for us all, making us feel more elegant – especially when trying on gowns. Don’t forget to bring shoes (in a similar heel to what you’ll be wearing on the day) and any accessories you’re thinking of wearing on the day so you can really get a feel for your bridal look.
