All You Need to Know About Choosing Your Wedding Flowers

The wedding flowers you choose can be used everywhere from backdrops to tables and chairs to your wedding cake and even on the wedding getaway car ribbons. With thoughtful planning, you can make sure that your chosen wedding flowers add the wow factor to your celebrations. Here are some useful tips to help you plan your wedding flowers…

Before you approach a decorator/florist for buying wedding flowers

  • Keep in mind the style, venue and the theme of your day, if any
  • The styles of the bride and bridesmaid dresses play an important role in determining the size and shape of the floral bouquets
  • Bear in mind the season for flower availability
  • Discuss with your fiancé(e)/wedding planner whether you want to opt for formal/informal flowers as well as your budget for the decorations

Choosing your wedding day florist

It is important to hire your wedding day florist at least 4 to 6 months before the wedding day. There are four ways in which you can find one:

  1. Through word of mouth referrals
  2. Asking at the venue or other wedding vendors
  3. Contacting locals florists near your home
  4. Use our Service Finder to find florists near you

Some brides also attend bridal exhibitions to get contact information for various florists. As is the case with other wedding vendors, make sure you contact several potential florists before settling on one. Bear in mind that some florists also charge consultation fees, (as many brides discuss floral arrangements with them only to do it themselves).

Preparing for the florist interview

In order to be well prepared, once you have booked your venue, decide on the theme and colours of the wedding and also bring a list of areas you will need flowers for from centrepieces to bouquet gifts for parents. Bring along a sample of your wedding colours or photographs and cut-outs of inspirational bridal flowers you love. Also bring along photos of bridal/bridesmaid dresses so your florist can choose the colours of the wedding flowers.

Questions to ask the florist:

  1. How long have you been in the business? Can you show a portfolio of your work?
  2. What flowers do you suggest for the time of year/theme/venue?
  3. What are your charges: do they include tips/gratuities/taxes? Is there any additional charge for delivery/set up?

Always ask for customized deals when looking for discounts.

Some more tips to bear in mind when ordering wedding flowers

  • Never opt for out-of-season flowers as they will be more expensive. Save time, money and hassle by opting for in-season flowers – they will be much fresher too
  • When arranging for flowers during the hot summer season, and especially for outdoor weddings, make sure that you have the flowers delivered as close to the wedding ceremony as possible
  • When looking to save money on wedding flowers, go for mid-priced flower options and choose simple designs when it comes to your floral arrangements

A good florist will give you considerable options and also suggest clever and innovative ways that can help you save money while giving you the wedding flowers of your dreams. Nowadays, you can also buy flowers made with silk, and other non-floral centrepieces. You can also mix real and artificial flowers or choose to be a bit more daring and go for DIY flower arrangements.
