Our Monthly Health & Fitness Feature from White Dress Workout | Top 5 Exercise Tips!

Our monthly health & fitness contributor; Jennie Law is the founder of White Dress WorkoutToday she is sharing her top 5 exercise tips…

1.  PLAN AHEAD.

If you have a specific body or weight goal you want to achieve for your big day then the sooner you start, the better. Don’t leave it until last minute like some brides who come to me a month before the big day expecting miracles. I don’t advocate quick fix weight loss methods but instead, I like to work with clients over a longer period of time to get the best results.

2.  PICK UP THE WEIGHTS.

Ladies, don’t be afraid of the dumbbells! Research has shown that women who do resistance training are stronger, leaner and healthier than those who do not. The human body naturally burns more calories each day to maintain a pound of muscle than it does to maintain a pound of fat, therefore, the more muscle you build, the more calories you will burn each day while at rest. Oh and don’t worry about looking big and bulky – as women, we have around 1/15th to 1/20th the amount of testosterone (the primary hormone responsible for muscle growth) as men. Instead, we become more toned and defined.

3.  HAVE A STRUCTURED PROGRAM.

If you want to reach your goals efficiently and effectively, you need to have a structured workout program. If, like some people, you spend endless hours on the treadmill, it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and incorporate weight training into your daily exercise routine along with some cardio. You will see quicker progress and you will be able to measure your strength and fitness progress week to week. If you’re not sure where to start with a workout program, you can hire a personal trainer – such as myself 😉 or alternatively, download a workout program from the White Dress Workout website. I also design individualized programs for those wanting a more tailored workout routine.

4.  SCHEDULE SET TIMES FOR YOUR WORKOUTS.

Out of sight, out of mind. Who can relate? If you have your workouts written into your diary then you’re more likely to do them and if they’re not then they may slip your mind in amongst all the other jobs and tasks you have to do that day. Make exercise a priority on your to-do-list and take just 30 minutes to an hour a day to work on you for you.

5.  DON’T BE AFRAID TO BE A BEGINNER.

We’ve all been there; even the people at the gym who are in amazing shape and know their way around the gym like the back of their hand. We all have to start somewhere so don’t be afraid to step into the gym if you’ve never been there before. Yes you may feel as though everyone is watching and judging you and that’ok too. If you feel super apprehensive, take a friend along with you so you can both be beginners together. Hire a personal trainer for a few sessions if you can afford it, even if it’s just to take you through the basics of training as this will really help you to feel more relaxed and in the know.
