Chateau Raysse is an utterly charming and romantic medieval castle in the Dordogne valley not far from the banks of the River Dordogne.
The Raysse family built the castle’s tower in 1155. The family was allied to the French Aquitaine duchy, which sided with the Englishman and later King of England, Richard the Lionheart & his wife, Eleanor against the French king, Louis VII. The body of the Chateau was built at the end of the religious wars (about 1690).
The ancient castle is a beautiful backdrop for your wedding. It sits close to the River Dordogne and the tiny village of Cazoules with its exceptional bakery. Souillac is a charming town 5 minutes away by car. The Périgord region in which the Dordogne sits is the birthplace of modern, Cro-Magnon (v. Neanderthal) man. Believed to be 17,000 years old, The ancient cave paintings at Lascaux are not to be missed. The Dordogne brims over with beautiful countryside and medieval towns and villages with a cornucopia of culinary delights at superb prices.
Getting there is easy. It is close to 3 international airports and there’s a rail station at Souillac on the Paris-Brive-Cahors-Toulouse line.
