10 Honeymoon Planning Tips | Travel Counsellors

In the last year I’ve been lucky enough to plan some beautiful and unique honeymoons for my clients.  From the relaxing beach honeymoon in The Maldives, travelling around South America to a road trip in New England.  Each tailormade to suit the couple 😊

Weddings are already a stressful experience but planning your honeymoon doesn’t have to be!  Today I wanted to share with you a few tips that I like to discuss with my clients at Travel Counsellors when planning their honeymoons.  Hopefully they will help with yours too.

1. When to book? In my experience, the earlier you book your honeymoon, the more chance you have of your dream getaway within your set budget.

2. Budget. Such an important question!  The world is a very big place and there is something special for each couple.  However, you must be realistic with how much you’d like to spend.  Also try and make sure your wedding fund and honeymoon fund are separate to avoid “borrowing” from each.

3. Be specific about what you want. One of the most frequent conversations I have with my clients are “I’d like to go somewhere romantic”.  Everyone’s idea of romance is very different.  So, have a chat with your partner and try and envisage what your honeymoon looks like to you both.  You might be surprised 😊

4. Use a travel agent where you can. Most people planning a wedding will use a wedding planner or an organiser.  Your honeymoon shouldn’t be any different.  A good travel agent will take away all the additional stress.  They’ll know the right questions to ask to try and narrow down your choices.  They also have the time to research the destinations in more depth and get the best rates.

5. Beware of additional costs. If you’re booking your own honeymoon, make sure you budget for the extras.  These can include visas, hotel transfers (especially in the Maldives), meals, travel insurance etc.

6. Do something a little special. Remember this trip is a once in a lifetime.  Many hotels will be able to offer certain honeymoon options including private dining, couples’ massages or rose petals on your bed.  Remember to plan so you can include in your budget.

7. Arrange a few surprises. It’s lovely to organise your honeymoon together, however it’s also nice to have a few surprises planned in resort.  These can include sunset hot air balloon, special dinners at an exclusive restaurant (e.g. dinner in a lighthouse), gifts in the room on arrival etc.

8. Leave a few days after the wedding. If your annual leave permits, why not give yourself a few days to relax after the wedding before jetting off on your vacation.

9. Write a honeymoon blog! Your honeymoon will go by so fast. Why not document it and share on social media?  You will be surprised how often you look back on it when you return to normal life and it will also provide inspiration to other couples.

10. Research and plan. Finally, I would say make sure you plan before you go.  The last thing you want to be doing on your honeymoon is googling the nearest restaurants, things to do in the area and trying to make last minute reservations.  Book as much as you can beforehand.

Hopefully that gives you some things to think about!  Feel free to get in touch with me to see how I can help you plan this very special trip.  Pop over to my profile page, or email lynne.haslop@travelcouncellors.ae or call on +971 50 104 0752.
