The Indian saree is without doubt a beautiful piece of fabric which can make any woman look gorgeous irrespective of size or height. However, most women tend to pick up a saree going by its respective shade or design without draping the saree first, which often results in a fashion faux pas. Each body type looks good in a certain fabric and this is often overlooked when it comes to choosing the right saree. We take a look at four common body types and suggest the right sarees for each:
Pear shaped body: Women with this body type are usually heavier from the waist down and would do well to avoid cuts and drapes that focus on the lower half of the body. On the other hand, such women would look great in chiffon or georgette sarees worn in bright colours with minimal jewellery. We suggest trying out sarees with embellishments or even interesting quirky designs like the Satya Paul range of sarees designed by Masaba Gupta.
Apple Shaped Body: Most Indian women tend to fall under this body type. Although apple shaped body types tend to be heavier around the stomach and waist, it is no reason to avoid being seen in a saree altogether. The trick is to choose sarees that have a lovely fall and which accentuate your figure without clinging to it. Kanjeevaram silk sarees are a definite yes because they are available in a range of designs too. Going for unique designs on the sleeve or with a longer fitting blouse will also work well.
Curvy Bodies: If you have a curvy figure, then take your pick from georgette, chiffon and net sarees. The trick is to keep your overall look simple yet stylish and to avoid going for sarees with very heavy embellishments as that could add bulk to your figure. Plain coloured sarees with a thick border or even dark shades with small designs will look good on you. We suggest adding that extra wow factor by opting for well-fitting blouses with stylish cuts.
Slim Bodies: One of the biggest plus points about having a slim figure is that you can wear practically any type of saree and still carry it off with élan – and they’ll work beautifully with blouses in styles such as backless, halter-neck, high-neck and even tube. If you want to add bulk to your frame, then light coloured sarees with heavy embellishments should be on your shopping list. For other occasions, cotton and organza sarees in bold prints and any hue will look fabulous.
