Planning a summer wedding? Having nightmares about melting makeup or sporting a sweaty face? Then read on for our tips to beat the summer heat and humidity…

Tips to beat the summer heat and humidity

For your skin:

  • Always use a sunscreen. Opt for an SPF of 30 or higher if you’re more susceptible to sunburn. Some moisturisers have it built in so that you can get two uses out of one single product. As it will be hot and humid, opt for non-greasy lotion to prevent your pores from getting clogged.
  • Use a good quality cleanser the end of each day to remove oil, makeup and other impurities that may build up on your skin during the day. Your skin needs a break when you sleep.
  • Exfoliate to remove dead skin and increase blood circulation to the face.
  • Use a facial mist or spritzer to keep your skin cool – it also helps settle your makeup and will leave your skin looking fresh and rejuvenated.
  • Spa treatments are a lovely treat for your skin but if you’re short on time, use occasional face masks to pamper your skin.
  • It is crucial to keep yourself hydrated at all times. Stay away from aerated drinks which are high in sugar (bad for the skin) and eat fruits and vegetables with higher water content.
  • When it comes to makeup, use lighter products and avoid powder based makeup because it can cause caking. Opt for oil-free products where possible.
  • Use water-resistant mascara which won’t run due to excess sweating.

 For your hair:

  • Like your skin, the sun can play havoc with your hair too. Step out using a hat, scarf or cap if you plan to be out and about for a while.
  • Always use a leave in conditioner to keep your hair moisturized and combat frizz. Pick a conditioner with an SPF for extra protection.
  • Avoid blow-drying your hair every time because the excessive heat can damage your hair further. Let your hair air-dry where possible and flaunt those natural waves whenever you can.
  • Chemicals in swimming pools are not kind to your tresses. Consider braiding your hair or wearing a cap before you get into the water and wash and condition your hair afterwards.
  • Use a mild shampoo if you need to wash your hair often. Strong shampoos and washing your hair too often can strip nutrients and dry out your hair.
  • Get creative with the way you style your hair. Use barrettes, clips or even scarves to tie up your hair so that it’s off your neck and you don’t feel too hot.
  • Deep condition your hair – deep conditioning can truly transform your tresses making them look healthy and shiny.
  • As with skin, your hair is an excellent reflection of your overall health. Drink plenty of fluids and eat protein and zinc rich foods to keep your hair looking great.
